New Report Card For Los Angeles Unified School District Unveiled

The Los Angeles Unified school district recently introduced its new and redesigned school report card. The new report card is designed to be more user-friendly than the earlier version. The report will tell how the school is doing (e.g. Academic Performance Index score – API), give guidance to parents on how to work with teachers and how to work with children at home.

The Los Angeles Public Schools report card will focus on four main sections:

Progress – includes metrics or measures that indicate how well students are moving toward the goal for each school level
Readiness – helps parents understand how well prepared students are to transition to the next schooling level
Learning Environment – is meant to provide context to help interpret the indicators of progress and readiness shown in the previous two sections
Student Groups – measures academic performance for different groups of students (e.g. ethnic groups, white, latino, afican american as well as English learners, etc.)

Each report card will provide data will be specific to that schools level. For example elementary schools data will focus on how many students are moving up or down in each grade level, and their proficiency rates. Middle school data will focus on how many students have successfully completed algebra, and are ready to move onto high school. And high school data will focus on such areas as how many students have completed CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam), completing A-G college requirements, percentage of students taking the SAT or ACT college tests, graduation rates, and how many students are going on to college, work/careers, military, etc.

Also data regarding the CST (CA Standards Test) will be provided on the report card. Parents can now see how students perform on these tests and will know how to  use the data to help students improve academic performance. The report cards were sent to over 600,000 students homes this month, and the district is excited to see how the data is utilized to help increase student performance by next year?

For over 70 years, graphic novels and comic books are entertaining young and old alike. The medium has begun to see substantial changes in the new digital age. The characters have gone from a G. rating to a PG rating and in some cases rated R. In some ways, the characters and storylines took a step back to the 30s and 40s at a time when many of the characters were dark and violent; the villains word on the sociopathic and the hero’s code wasn’t always black and white.

Comics these days seem to possess much more intricate storylines. Sometimes subplots are incorporated in the story so when a future occurrence materializes, you are cognizant of it. the motion picture industry have taken notice of the increased complexity of comic book stories and characters; they have found new source material. This symbiotic relationship between comics and film has drawn fans from both media together to share the excitement of this amalgamation.

Whether adapted for films, television or radio back in the 40s, comics have always been inadequately translated and recycled for popular consumption. For some it is a matter of technology; it was not easy translating the unique fantasy and storytelling medium to celluloid. The digital age and a new crop of creative talent raised on comics changed all that; the new breed of motion picture creators intrinsically understood what was needed to make the transition from their love of comic storytelling. Oftentimes I was delighted at the films, despite the fact that I had a different version of what should have been done.

Over the last decade, we’ve watched heroes fall or lose their moral compass. They are usually killed for the enormous ratings potential but of course, in the comics universe that isn’t always final. Like a good Stephen Spielberg film, these creators know how to tug the right strings that cause you to feel for the characters they’re about to sacrifice. You feel cheated. The bad guy may have gotten away in spite of the determination of the fallen heroes comrades. Like any police officer or firefighter, these heroes understood the risk they were undertaking; the writers understood those risks as well and continue to play them out to the bitter end. A sense of drama often pulls you in to the point at which you feel present at the tragedy. One of the most telling features of the new stories is the incorporation of continuity of events from one book to the next; women became pregnant and had their children while battle scars and trauma continued throughout the story arcs.
The costumes changed as well, the garish colors of tight spandex began to give way to the paramilitary tones and designs.

Unlike actors, comic book characters are ageless; they only grow old when it suits the writer. Quite often the characters look and feel is updated to conform to popular sentiment; the influence of blockbuster versions of themselves in the theaters will influence the editors and artists at the company. Apart from the most popular and enduring characters in the genre, many heroes and villains have made the costume change as a way of generating interest in their books. Whether the change takes place to fit the expectations of a new generation or to conform with their cinematic counterparts heroes and villains now easily make the stylistic transition. In fact, it is difficult to recognize some of the classic characters if you’re just reentering the comic book market after a decade or two.

After many decades, comics and graphic novels have reentered the mainstream consciousness. There’s something fresh and vibrant about an industry that understands the need for change and flexibility in service of its market. I continue to read comics for those very reasons and will probably continue for decades to come. I had been enthralled as a young boy reading comic books in my bed. I read them as an adult and am just as captivated. I admit that the most consistent element in the medium has been the amazing imagination of comic creators and their ability to draw you into their world.

Watchmen Graphic Novel Should be Left a Comic Book

Started in 1986, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons formulate a mystery based on the Cold War, wherein the threat of nuclear warfare is an imminent fear. The story explores the possibility that superheroes existed in the 1940s. Thus, in the setting of the Watchmen graphic novel, superheroes are roughly classified into two. They are either working for the government, donning their suits while on retainer by people’s taxes, or they are outlawed. Most superheroes not working for the government have decided to embark on other productive endeavors like business, leaving crime-fighting and costume-wearing behind. Some continue to be heroes, but are considered as fugitives, thanks to the law that was passed outlawing superheroes.

Creator Alan Moore cannot be blamed for wanting his art to remain in the chosen medium it was created. Not only due to the huge differences between perusing a comic book and watching a film, but undeniably also because of the harrowing experiences he had with his publisher and the process of converting his work from paper to film. Initially, he thought that separating himself from the process of converting his work to a movie would turn out fine. Moore admits that he was wrong about distancing himself. The latest of his work to be released as a movie is the Watchmen graphic novel.

“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” one of Moore’s works, was adapted into film. He distanced himself, feeling that as long as he didn’t see any of the film and had nothing to do with it, everything will be fine. He was fairly surprised when producer Martin Poll and writer Larry Cohen filed a law suit against 20th Century Fox for alleged plagiarism. They claim that their script yet to be produced was copied. Indeed, the two scripts bore many similarities, but these are elements added to the film and were not in any way found in Moore’s comics. Due to the lawsuit, Alan Moore had to testify in a deposition. The experience, he described, is incomparable and shockingly painful. As if the misery was not enough, Fox settled the case, signaling to Moore that it was an admission of guilt, something he was very sure he has no involvement.

When “V for Vendetta” was made into a film, producer Joel Silver stated to the press that fellow producer Larry Wachowski had talked with Alan Moore, and that Moore was excited about the project. But according to Moore, he adamantly refused to be part of anything with films, and still wasn’t interested in Hollywood. Alan Moore wanted a public retraction and an apology. While he got an apology from Silver, who appears also been deceived by Wachowski, there never was a public retraction. Aside from this, Moore claims that the comic book was specifically about anarchy and fascism. Nowhere in the movie was these two things even seen or mentioned. Clearly, the adaptation of the comic book into a film reinvents Moore’s work into something totally different, something Moore would have not created and would definitely not want to be credited with.

The Watchmen graphic novel is being adapted into a film, and is set for release this 2009. Everybody can understand the reluctance and displeasure by Alan Moore. It is bad enough that he doesn’t get paid for his work, now he gets his name attached to work inherently at odds with what and who Alan Moore is.
